Pycnogenol from pine bark is the most powerful anti oxidant in existence. It is 20 times more powerful than Vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than Vitamin E. It actually protects Vitamin C from destruction by pollutants and thereby indirectly supports Vitamin C´s role in keeping up the integrity of Collagen and Elastin. These two elements are essential for a normal (functioning of arteries, capillaries and veins. Women who smoke and take oral contraceptives are at a great risk of Vitamin C depletion because Vitamin C is tied up with catching free radicals. Pycnogenol spares Vitamin C, so it can go about its job of strengthening the lining of blood vessels, while Pycnogenol catches the free radicals. Pycnogenol is a natural 85 to 95 % concentrate of proanthocyanidins extracted from the bark of the Maritime Pine, Pinus pinaster maritima. Procanthocyanidins are a special class of bioflavinoids. Pycnogenol shows no loss of integrity after long term storage and stays in the body for 72 hours. It is unique in that it crosses the blood brain barrier to provide anti oxidant protection to the central nervous system
